What's more Maugham can see through Isabel from the start and pokes and prods her with intimate insults that at one point even leaves her throwing Elliott's Royal Crown Derby plates at him. He returns to Paris where he refuses Elliott's hospitality in favor of roughing it in the coal mines. She introduces Maugham to Gray Maturin, son of a millionaire investment banker in Chicago who is as virile and strong as Larry is puny and unassuming. She is not very educated and she is jealous of Ellie, who shows off her knowledge to the guests. Well, love isn't a good sailor and it languishes on a sea voyage. Pursuing money in any way is seen as crass and loathsome. He was amused at her proposal and she saw he was inclined to accept. He and Isabel decide to marry later. Trying to get rid of a beggar, the narrator starts feeling annoyed.

Maugham introduces one more unforgettable character: Suzanne Rouvier, mutual friend of the narrator and of Larry who came to Montmartre from the countryside without a penny, but realized her facility as a model and artist's muse. It is about a person he knew. Of course there can be desire without love. If he's out chasing transcendentalism, how am I supposed to feed myself, or any children we have? Maugham is friends with Elliot Templeton, an American born snob whose passion is for European high society.
A pilgrimage to India results in a spiritual revelation for Darrell, and it is at this point that his entire world begins to shift. This book is full of brilliant characterizations and the dialogue was absorbing. Of no city, in my experience, is this more true than of Paris. Maugham is a character in the story, he even retains his own name. My favorite author John Steinbeck's work is strong with the allure of both of these and so is The Razor's Edge.

The story is about the journey of all these characters as they each pursue their own personal goals. Look at your shirt, it's a disgrace, and your studio is a mess. He used to be in the center of events, but now he is left alone. In India, Larry finally finds answers to some of his questions about life. The one other character that just took in what they saw of Larry was Mrs. Maugham does not let Elliot down either, but this is a part of the story I will not divulge other than to say that the episode will surely make you smile.
He tells them he has found peace and no longer needs money or other material things. But the foul-mouthed Sophie of the novel tells Maugham what led to her final fall in a scene that was once again better done in the film when we're shown how Isabel has lured Sophie to temptation. But writing was his true vocation. The Maugham who wrote this book is wise and savvy and enlightened. What Larry tries to do for Sophie he accomplishes with Suzanne.
